Writing the Spiritual Journey Workshop Series

How do we write about what we can’t see, but only feel or experience? How do we begin to explain the invisible, the inexplicable, the mysterious, the transformative around us and within us. How do we make sense of the world during chaotic times? Magic, Miracles, Synchronicities.
Come write with others as we explore our lives through the lens of faith, belief, the spiritual.
Faith. Belief. Magic. Spells. Prayers. Traditions we hold dear. Ancient practices. How do we explain our faith or beliefs during difficult times? How do we describe the indescribable? How do writers talk about their faith in a culture that either relegates the supernatural to the Syfy channel, or dismisses religious devotion and orthodoxy to the most vocal churches and politicians on the extremes? How can writers feel comfortable sharing aspects of their faith in essays, memoir, and fiction? And how can writing be just as transformative to the writer, as it might be to the reader?
This writing workshop is open to any person with any spiritual beliefs, even those who have struggled with having a faith at all anymore or lost their faith. You may be a current or former Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Wiccan, Pagan, Agnostic, or someone who puts together their own set of beliefs. How you left a belief system, or how you acquired a new one is valuable to write about for others and for ourselves, as is how you practice one. There are highs and lows with any spiritual belief system. We respect the struggle here. No one should feel defensive or required to prove the existence of a higher power. It doesn’t mean we won’t find writers who critique our writing about those beliefs, those events, to make them understandable and more clear to an audience who might be unfamiliar with those beliefs, but we are not here to dismiss anyone’s beliefs out of hand.
11 Workshops are available and you can take them individually or you can stack them up like a series and get a lot of practice on your writing projects. All of these start Sunday, October 26, 2-3:30, but then move to Saturday mornings on November 1st from 10:30-Noon. All writing workshops take place at the Sacred Owl and Salt Room. Understand that each class may have one other writer or seven other writers. While I would love for most people to take more than one class, I am prepared to teach the class if only one person comes.
